The Name

I once denied being the “top banana”. The reply was “well then, you must be  the HR banana”! Most likely you are an HR banana as well.  Welcome to the bunch and I hope something here has appeal to you!

The Authors

HR Banana Steve has worked in Human Resources for over 30 years all in the healthcare arena. For 25 of those years, he served as CHRO in both for-profit and not-for-profit hospitals.

Early in his career, a CEO challenged him to turn the HR department into the “experts in the management and utilization of human resources”.  A lightbulb went in in Steve’s head (underneath his peel at the non-mushy end) as he realized that this could include “all things people”and could vastly expand the scope and influence of HR. The CHRO role should be the people equivalent of the CFO role.

As a result, his departments became expert in productivity management. This resulted in literally millions in cost-reduction at subsequent organizations.

However, this was not achieved as a result of a “scorched earth” approach.  Twice, organizations were led to the #1 and #2 spot in “best places to work” listings.  Employee satisfaction improved in every facility.

He is passionate about HR getting a seat at the table by adding measurable bottom-line value to the organization. . He has been involved in organizations transitioning from not-for-profit to for-profit status, and has championed what he calls high performance HR in both types of organizations.

While esoteric discussions of HR theory or human behavior are fascinating, (he follows them on other blogs), the real value is when someone makes a practical application.  He loves expanding his toolbox by sharing best practices with other HR professionals and engaging in periodic debates to solidify his own viewpoints and point out the errors in the thinking of others! (lol if that needs to be pointed out.)

Sammy, the Wonder Dog provides editorial comment and mutinous mutterings as he feels led.

Sammy’s vocational experience consists of digging , chasing, tracking lizards, and herding (everybody). Interestingly enough, those activities are the same as his hobby and leisure interests. It just goes to prove the old adage that you will be most successful in life doing what interests you!

AboutHis is a real “rags to riches” story as he escaped a bad background in order to achieve what he has today. For readers interested in his bio, check out:  Sammy’s Story.
